You have to have software to do it, and you need to make sure that the software BACKS UP YOUR REGISTRY!
There are two that I use all the time, they are the best, out of all the one’s I have tried:
jv16powertools by Macecraft
Registry Mechanic 7
Both of these are good, I prefer jv16powertools because you get a whole suite of other tools along with it, and its cheap,
$29.95 and you get lifetime updates for free. And, it does everything Registry Mechanic 7 does.

What the software does is go through your registry looking for dead stuff, stuff that has been left in the registry for many different reasons but is no longer being used by your computer orthe software you have. It locates and identifies this garbage and rids the computer of it.
Then, you want to compress the registry hive. There is a simple separate tool in jv16powertools that does this. Compressing the hive means that it goes through the registry and finds null or empty spaces left behind by deleting the garbage out and compacts the hives. It is also called registry compaction for this reason.
Some people are against registry cleaning and compaction, mainly IT people who are afraid something will happen. As long as you know what you are doing, you back up your computer and your registry, and you make sure that you DO A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT…you are ok, I think.
Educate yourself first before you do it, so you won’t mess things up. I have been doing registry cleaning and hive compacting for a long time with these two tools and they work great!

Cleaning the registry is removing the unused entries from programs and windows it self has installed. Using a bad cleaner can make windows unbootable and or unreliable. If your computer is working well I would not recommend doing it. I have done it and I have not seen any advantage as in speed boost or in realizability. The choice is yours, good luck

First off I recommend knowing how to restore your computer just in case you do mess up. I am not just talking about a system restore point either, i mean a complete fresh install or using the computer manufacturers restoration disc or utility.
Registry cleaning as described above deletes out old or useless entries. programs are made to do this but it can also be doen manually. The mannual way is not suggested unless you know exactly what you are looking for. Most programs I have seen only clean out some of the registry, the more important parts of the registry are usually left alone so no major mistales can be made but some do actually do a deep scan and get boot entries and such. Most of the time if these are deleted out then a fresh install is required, even if you backed up the registry cause the computer will not boot at all into Windows.
RegistryMechanic is a tool I used to use a lot but it can mess up the bott entries if not careful. Ccleaner is another registry cleaner that is very popular and free but it does not do a deep down clean or even compact the registry. cleaning the registry and then not compacting it would be the same as leaving it junked up. You would not notice any speed improvements if left uncompacted. The speed improvement is mainly noticed at startup. Not much else can be noticably seen but it there all the same, just in small amounts, programs may start slightly quicker than before. Microsoft has a Safety Scanner that does a virus check, clean up and defrag online that is pretty good. you can just use the clean up part to clean your registry but this does not compact the registry. A seperate program would be needed like RegistryMechanic to compact the registry.
if you decide to clean the registry just make sure to be prepared to completely reinstall the operating system just in case you make a mistake. It is easy to mess up your computer this way but once you understand what you are doing then it is worth it for the slight performance gains.

Yes, you can edit your registry on own. However, need to back up your registry before you edit it. Or you may want use a registry cleaner. Check out the link:

Editing the Windows registry should not be done manually unless you are very technical and given the type of question, I surely don’t think you are. In any case, make sure you BACKUP your registry before making any changes, even if you use any recommended software utility.
